The Color of Law
Written by Richard Rothstein. A must read for everyone, particularly those who shape the built environment. It provides a well researched and detailed account of the United States government’s history of segregation.
Exhalation
Written by Ted Chiang. A book of science fiction short stories; each full of imagination and heart. Two stories that particularly stand out are “The Great Silence” and the title story “Exhalation”.
Braiding Sweetgrass
Written by Robin Wall Kimmerer. A truly beautiful read. A collection of writings that weave together themes of reciprocity, mutuality, and care.
Broken Earth Series
Written by N. K. Jemisin. A three-part series with impressive world building and character depth. Each book builds up on the last in unexpected ways, leaving the reader guessing about both the future and the past.
I Think You’re Wrong, But I’m Listening
Written by Beth A. Silvers and Sarah Stewart Holland. It’s mission is to portray the importance of nuance, with the intent of deepening understanding of our own perspectives as well as those of others.
The Miracle of Mindfulness
Written by Thich Nhat Hanh and translated by Mobi Ho. A beautiful introduction to mindfulness and meditation and how these can bring deeper peace and gratitute to one’s life.
When I Sing, Mountains Dance
Written by Irene Solà and translated by Mara Faye Lethem. A work of fiction set in the Pyrenees mountains; it tells the story of a village through the lens of it’s people, animals, landscape, and folklore. The unique writing style left me wanting to read it again as soon as I finished.
Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World
Written by Vivek H. Murthy. An emotional look at the human experience in today’s world and the importance of building community with love and care at it’s core.
